Major Result

Golf Bug delights in showing footage of the greats of the game in action during their prime, and a genuine golf brand with outstanding heritage that has been performing at the highest level since the 1920’s is Wilson. That Wilson have been enormously successful over the years is not surprising, but the degree of their success, particularly at the very highest level, may well be.

Nike SumoThat is, of course, until you start looking at the names of the players that have played with Wilson down the years. With some of the games real greats playing Wilson clubs, they have amased more Major wins than any other brand, with a remarkable total of 58 victories!!

Sarazen, Snead, Palmer, Casper, Miller, Crenshaw, Langer, Irwin, Stewart, Daly and Singh all won majors with Wilson in the bag. The magic also worked for players like Rogers, North and Lawrie who may not have won too many events but still managed a major with Wilson.

Callaway Wilson’s latest big success is Padraig Harrington, the current European Number One. He must really like the look of these statistics and is surely set to push Wilson to new heights!

Azinger gets real

The new captain of the USA Ryder Cup team spent little time in his new role before making significant changes to the selection policy for the team that will compete at Valhalla in 2008.

Paul Azinger has decided that he will choose four of the players for the team and the rest will be selected based on the amount of money they win as opposed to the number of top ten finishes they achieve.

It could be argued that this is a reflection of just how weak he considers American golf to be at present! The main reason why Azinger decided to change the system was based on the fact that less than 60% of the available points that could have been earnt, were actually accrued, by American players finishing in the top ten. This was as a result of the many very good performances by non American players on the US Tour! If you take away the stunning performances of Tiger Woods, then it seems that the dominance so often associated with American golf is simply not there at present, and its not simply a Ryder Cup problem. The reality is that the global expansion of the sport has lead to many quality golfers from many different countries.

It must be a good thing, but it would still be great to one day again see characters like Nicklaus, Palmer, Trevino, Miller, Weiskopf, Watson, Crenshaw, Floyd and so many others.

Talking of Lee Trevino, watch out for the great man’s first appearance on Golf Bug TV in a couple of weeks! The man was a genius!
